One of the largest group of people that immigrated to America during this time came from Ireland and they immigrated to escape the Irish Potato Famine. The Irish Potato Famine began in 1845 and lasted for about six years. Potatoes were a staple, a main part, of the Irish peoples diet but in 1845 a disease infected many of the potatoes in Ireland. The disease continued to spread throughout Europe, causing the potato crop to die and become inedible. This lasted for six years, causing an increase of sickness, poverty, starvation and death to the people of the affected area. As a last resort, in hopes of escaping the poverty and poorer living conditions, many Irish decided to emigrate (to leave) out of Ireland and come to America. Many of these immigrants settled in large cities in the east, including Boston.
